In Spain, occupants will have 24 hours to leave their home

In Spain

The Senate in Spain approved a bill aimed at combating okupas. If the Congress of Deputies (lower house) adopts the reform, then home invaders will face the following changes:

  • After receiving notification, they will be given only 24 hours to leave someone else’s apartment or house. If they refuse, the occupiers will be forcibly evicted.
  • They will be prohibited from registering at the address of the property they occupied without permission.
  • In court, the right to residence will be proven by the “occupier,” and not the owner.
  • For occupiers, punishments will be expanded and prison terms will be increased.
  • Urgent court hearings will be held to quickly resolve disputes.
